Finca El Naciente is settled in the highlands that surround the municipality of Las Vegas in the Santa Barbara department. Gabriel Leiva named his farm El Naciente due to the natural water spring located on the farm. Gabriel’s father started, many years ago, producing sugar cane and coffee on this same land. Although his core crop was sugar cane, he taught his children how to work with both products. When Gabriel was 20 years old, he inherited a piece of his father’s land and that was when Gabriel first became a coffee producer. He knew that the land was located in a place with excellent climatic and soil conditions to produce coffee, so he decided to focus on this. Today, the harvest work is completed by Gabriel, his wife Claudia and their two sons.
Gabriel’s first few years of producing coffee were challenging. Sales weren’t good, and low prices made it difficult to sustain a family and without even thinking about reinvesting in the farm. Times were tough but after speaking with his neighbour, who sold his coffee on the specialty coffee market, Gabriel decided to ask him to take some samples of his coffee to Beneficio San Vicente, just to see how it cupped. His coffees were cupped well and with a few changes made on the farm Gabriel had found a great opportunity to sell his coffee. This in turn allowed his to continue working on and investing in his farm. He knows that his farm has great potential and he wants to make the most of it. Currently he is planning to continue producing high quality and to continue expanding his farm.
